Questions and Answers about Training Courses are offered as post-graduate education for mental health professionals. A primary aspect of the Center's mission is to provide training. A core perspective is relational systemic approach to psychotherapy, in which the bio-psycho-social context of individuals is fundamental to understanding and therapeutic action. Therapy and training aim to be culturally sensitive, collaborative, and relevant to the practical realties of clients' lives. Most trainees are postgraduate Masters or Doctoral level clinicians or degree candidates. Trainees either work for the Center in its programs, or are employed in other clinical or human service settings and participate in Center courses. Seminars and workshops are conducted at the center or within community agencies or at other designated sites. A central objective of our training and educational activities is to further the representation of cultural groups currently underrepresented within the corps of practitioners, supervisors, and leaders in the field. Specifically, we would like to support minority professionals toward the achievement of the highest qualifications in their respective fields. Our courses are also open to professionals in allied fields for whom a family systems perspective is useful in activities of their own profession: teachers, healthcare professionals, human service professionals, lawyers, and judges. The faculty members of the Center train human service professionals in the adaptation of a family systems perspective to work in settings where families and children are served. We work with schools, day care settings, school based youth services programs and consult to a wide range of private, non-profit, state, and federal service agencies. Supervision and consultation I. Skills development seminar: An advanced training seminar in couples and family therapy is offered to professionals who have completed their graduate education in social work, psychology or psychiatry. This course is geared to bringing a family systems orientation to therapy when treatment has to be time limited. Diversity in culture, race, class, gender, religion and sexual orientation is highlighted. Participants learn to broaden their repertoire of skills and to deal with conflicts that have escalated to physical or sexual violence. II. Individual supervision and case consultation: Mental health professionals are supervised by Center faculty in face-to-face conversations. Private practitioners must have proper licensing and malpractice insurance. Professional agencies are required to provide written approval for participation in the supervisory process. Psychotherapy Community Service Funding for Center programs Funds for The Center's programs are provided by the State of New Jersey, Department of Human Services, by the Division of Addiction Services, by the New Jersey Psychological Association Foundation as well as by private foundations or individuals.
